Policy Makers Need to Hear Your Voice

Queens Library in partnership with Marxe School of Public and International Affairs at Baruch College, CUNY present A Public Voice: Safety and Justice Forum

After falling steadily for decades, the rate of violent crime in the United States rose again in 2015 and 2016. Interactions between citizens and police too often end in violence. People are increasingly worried about safety in their communities. How should communities increase safety while at the same time ensuring justice?

The purpose of “A Public Voice” is to have community members engage in conversations to inform local, regional, and national policymakers on the topics of Safety and Justice here in New York City. The conversation is guided by the new National Issue Guide created by the National Issues Forums, which explores three policy options for how to prevent violence and create thriving communities in NYC. In partnership with the Kettering Foundation, we will be gathering information generated at the forum to inform legislators about what citizens in conversations want to see happen on this critical public issue.

Forum participants engage in deliberation, weighing options for actions against personal values. This calls upon participants to listen respectfully to each other, sort out their views in terms of what they most value, consider courses of actions and their tradeoffs, and seek to identify actionable areas of common ground. Through this process, participants move from holding individual opinions to making collective choices as diverse members of a community.
